Do you want to be found?
Ever get a call from a client asking "Do you have a website?"
Would you open a business and not advertise it? Obviously, you wouldn't expect to get any customers or even inquiries. You may be lucky to have a few people come in out of curiosity or by accidentally stumbling into your business premise.
But, what has this analogy got to do with SEO writing?
Well, that's exactly what it means to create a business website and not make it easy for clients to find it. SEO is the key to clients and potential customers finding your online business. A research study by AICPA found out that businesses which reported a five times growth ranked SEO as an effective online tool contributing to the growth. So, you really don't want to ignore SEO.
But, first lets understand what SEO is and why it's important for your business.
What is SEO?
I'm pretty sure you've heard or come across the term search engine optimization (SEO). The good news is that, SEO is not as complicated as it's made to sound. Simply put, SEO is the activity of ensuring that your website is found by search engines using relevant words and phrases.
When you open a search engine and type in a search query, you get a list of results that closely match the terms entered. You'll get that there are pages that appear on the first page of the search engine. The most interesting thing is that people tend to only look at that first page and disregard the thousands of other pages from the search results. This is one of the reasons why optimization is important as it helps your website rank on the top page.
There is more to SEO than keywords
I know we just said that SEO is not as complicated as it's made to sound. But, it doesn't mean that throwing a number of keywords on your content will see your page ranking on the top pages. The search algorithms used today are getting smarter than those used previously. Some of the elements used by the algorithms to rank results include:
- Relevance – Search results show pages that are related to the keywords entered.
- Authority – this helps to determine the accuracy and how trustworthy a site is. A search engine verifies the authority of a website by looking at other pages linking to that page. These pages are known as backlinks.
- Usefulness – A page may be relevant and have authority yet not be useful to the readers. Search engines measure usefulness according to how users interact with search results. When you have great content users will link to your pages and as a result, the search engines rate your site higher.
